Entity Types

What is an Entity Type?

Entity types identify and categorise entities on the Entity Board and in the Network Map. They are used to filter entities by type on Entity Boards.

When the term Entity Type is used in the Data Catalogue, it includes all categories so the relationships of reports and data sources can also be viewed in the Data Catalogue. This means that both asset types and entity types will appear in the Data Catalogue.

Only an Administrator can manage entity types in the Entity Type menu that is found under the Settings Cog at the top right of the page.

Entity Type Page

The category of Data Catalogue is only used when users specifically need an Entity Type for the Data Catalogue.

The asset type categories Report and Data Source are also used in the Data Catalogue, but new Asset Types cannot be created here. If a user wants to edit or create a new entity type with the Report or Data Source category, users have to switch to the BI Catalogue to make those changes.

How to create an Entity Type

Select Entity Types.

How to edit the layout of the card and row of an Entity Type

Just as you can edit an Asset card and row, you are also able to edit the card and row of an entity type. The entity card and row layout editor is the same as the asset card and row editor, please read more here to learn how to edit a card or row layout. The network map is unique to the Data Catalogue and here, you can select where the button is located on an entity card or row.

First select an entity type from the Entity Types page.

For this example I have selected the entity type ‘Field - Calculated Column’.

Edit the card view of an Entity Type

Select the card layout editor from the right-hand action menu.

Card Layout Editor

You can select layout options from the list on the right using the + button and deselect them by clicking on the green tick.

Move items using the arrows

You can move layout options using the arrows that appear when hovering over a layout option. You can also drag and drop layout options.

If you have previously pinned a custom attribute to an entity type, but you have also chosen that this custom attribute will not display on a card layout for that entity type, your card layout will take precedence over any pinned custom attributes. The custom attribute will not display on the entity card even though it is pinned.

Edit the list view of an Entity Type

Select the row layout editor from the right-hand action menu. The editing process is the same as above for card view.

Row Layout Editor

In list view, you can select layout options from the list below the preview layout by using the + button to select and the green tick to deselect.

Select items using the icons on right of the list

You can move layout options using the arrows that appear when hovering over a layout option, or you can drag and drop items in the preview layout.

Move items using the arrows

Unlike the asset row, the entity row has no limit on the number of layout options and you are able to select your chosen number of items.

Save your layout using the save button in the right-hand action menu. These layout changes will now be displayed when viewing this entity type.
